Could planting virtual trees make a difference for a more sustainable Washington, D.C.?
That's the idea unveiled by urban forestry expert Mark Buscaino at the Policy Greenhouse held July 10, 2009, at The George Washington University. Buscaino says technologies exist to develop a web-based software tool which would allow a D.C. resident to access a satellite image of their land, "plant" a virtual tree, and depending upon the type and placement of that tree, show its benefits as they accrue over the tree’s lifetime.
This kind of tool, says Buscaino, would allow a homeowner, builder, designer, or landscape architect to “test” different tree plantings to determine the best tree to plant and where to plant it. With funding support from the District, Casey Trees, along with its partners in the US Forest Service and private industry, are poised to develop such a web-based tool.
