Fast Facts About Energy
Yet while America is certainly consuming more energy than ever, our per person consumption levels are more or less stable. There are many reasons for this. One is that while technology is getting more energy efficient, our population has grown, not to mention we’re driving more than ever and using more technology than any generation before us. For example, car engines are more efficient than they used to be, but we've been buying bigger cars like SUVs, so overall gas mileage hasn't improved. The economy plays a role here, too. In recessions, fewer products are made and fewer people commute to work, so energy use goes down.
